Two Wives is Fine, but Not Two Baby’s Mammas
A Pennsylvania woman has been charged in the murder of her husband. According to prosecutors, the motive dealt with polygamy. Apparently, the woman’s husband, who was Muslim, wanted to impregnate his second wife who currently lives in Morocco.
The woman in question murdered her husband just prior to the time when he was set to leave for a trip to Morocco. During this trip, he was set to impregnate his new, second wife. Myra Morton turned herself in on Thursday and will face murder charges in the death of her 47 year old husband, Jereleigh Morton.
Mrs. Morton shot her husband as he lay sleeping in his bed on a Sunday morning. This was just hours before he was set to leave the couple’s million dollar home to head to Africa. The goal of the trip was conception of a child. According to the prosecutors, Morton met his second wife, last year on the Internet.
Mrs. Morton visited Morocco last year to witness the marriage and see that it was legal under Islamic law. However, according to reports by the AP her willingness was rather reluctant. On the day of the murder, she had originally reported that an intruder had shot her husband. However, immediate problems in her story arose when there were no signs of forced break-in through the house. Additionally, Morton was shot with his own gun and it was not in a readily available place. He had been shot twice.
Mrs. Morton has been charged with both first and third degree murder and other related counts. She is currently being held without bail until a hearing on August 20. Prosecutors feel that the motive had to do with control of the Morton fortune, which totaled upwards of $6 Million.
Mrs. Morton has not made any form of public statements, though one of her lawyers has said that she’s going through a terrible time, and that she was devastated by what happened. Originally from North Philadelphia, the Morton’s converted to Islam around 20 years prior to these incidents. Until 2005, the couple lived under more modest means. However, a medical malpractice settlement produced $8 million. The settlement dealt with the death of the couple’s teenage daughter.
