Nurse Sentenced to Life in Prison
In April, a New Jersey fertility nurse was found guilty of murdering and dismembering her husband. This week, a New Jersey judge ruled out any claims of innocence for the nurse. Middlesex Superior Court Judge Frederick De Vesa sentenced Melanie McGuire to the maximum penalty, life in prison.
McGuire was visibly distraught as the judge read her sentence and sentenced her to a much longer sentence than the 30 years her lawyers had requested. During the sentencing, the Judge showed his own distaste with the defendant stating, “One who callously destroys a family to accomplish her own selfish ends must face the most severe consequences that the law can provide.”
In April, McGuire was convicted on four counts that include first degree murder, which occurred on (my birthday) April 28, 2004. In addition to the life sentence, she also received an additional ten years for desecrating human remains and another five years for perjury in family court. McGuire apparently dismembered the body and threw the three suitcases that were filled with his body parts into a body of water. They washed -up on the Chesapeake Bay shores about three weeks later.
McGuire may not have to spend her entire life in prison though. If she is lucky enough to be alive when she is 100 years old, she will be eligible for parole. The sentence was read after hearing statements from the McGuire family. McGuire’s niece stated that Mrs. McGuire robbed the family of their innocence and their faith in humanity.
According to the prosecutors during the trial, the motive was to avoid a messy divorce. Apparently the good nurse wanted to run away and start a new life with her boss, but she had to get rid of her husband first.
There was no evidence forensically speaking, so prosecutors used evidence of the affair to make their case, along with forensic testimony that stated the garbage bags used on McGuire were the same type of bags that were used in the McGuire home. McGuire did not speak during her trial, though she does maintain her innocence. According to her lawyers, she did not do this, so she feels no remorse.
